We cannot start talking about constipation without first understand what constipation is. Constipation is defined as the irregular or difficult stool movements. It may be occasional (travel, pregnancy, etc…) Or in some cases chronic. We usually speak of chronic constipation when the problem lasts for at least 6 months with some obvious symptoms. Normally we talk about constipation when the stools are hard and difficult to evacuate. This usually occurs if fewer than three bowel movements per week.

It is generally recommended to absorb 2 to 3 liters of fluid per day, much of which is provided by food. In general, it is suggested to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily, between meals. It might be a good idea for people suffering from constipation to drink magnesium-rich mineral waters as it has a gentle laxative effect.
Exercising is important
Exercise regularly. Brisk walking and cycling can have some positive effects on the muscles and improve bowel movements.
Do not hesitate
Whenever you feel the urge you should rush to the toilet. Peristalsis is a process by which the intestine evacuates stools and this is stimulated by eating. It is a natural reflex that helps to smooth out the stool. By refusing to listen to your body you can cause your symptoms to become worse.
You should not believe that there is a magic constipation relief that exist. There are some cases where doctors may make use of laxatives. However long term treatment is not indicated in the cases of constipation.
